WordPress vs Custom Website: Which Should You Choose in 2026? Blog
Choosing between WordPress and a fully custom-coded website is the first big decision for most projects. I build both, so here is the unbiased comparison I give my own clients.
When WordPress wins
WordPress powers over 40% of the web for a reason. If you need a business site, a blog, or a portfolio — and you want to edit content yourself without calling a developer — WordPress is usually the right call. It is faster to build, cheaper, and your team can manage it with zero coding knowledge.
When custom code wins
If your website is your product — a booking system, a dashboard, a marketplace — custom code (React, Next.js, Node.js) gives you full control, better performance, and no plugin limitations. Custom sites also tend to score higher on Core Web Vitals, which directly helps SEO.
The hybrid option most people miss
You can use WordPress as a headless CMS: your team edits content in WordPress, while visitors see a lightning-fast Next.js frontend. It costs more upfront but combines the best of both worlds.
My honest rule of thumb
- Marketing site or blog → WordPress
- Web application or SaaS → Custom (Next.js)
- Content-heavy site that must be extremely fast → Headless WordPress + Next.js
