Shopify vs WooCommerce: An Honest Comparison From a Developer Blog
Shopify or WooCommerce? I have built stores on both, and the right answer depends on three things: your budget, your technical comfort, and how custom your store needs to be.
Shopify: pay for peace of mind
Shopify hosts everything, secures everything, and just works. Setup takes days, not weeks. The trade-off is monthly fees plus transaction costs, and less freedom for deep customization. If you want to focus on selling — not maintaining a website — Shopify is worth every dollar.
WooCommerce: pay with your time
WooCommerce is free and sits on WordPress, so you own everything and can customize anything. But you are responsible for hosting, security, updates, and the occasional plugin conflict. Total cost is often similar to Shopify once you add quality hosting and premium plugins — you just pay differently.
The decision table
- First store, no tech team: Shopify
- Already have a WordPress site: WooCommerce
- Highly custom checkout or product logic: WooCommerce (or custom Next.js)
- Selling internationally with minimal hassle: Shopify
What matters more than the platform
Honestly? Product photos, clear pricing, fast loading, and easy checkout decide your sales far more than the platform does. I have seen a well-run WooCommerce store outsell a neglected Shopify store — and the reverse.
Setting up a store and want it done right the first time? Store setup and migration are both services I offer.
